Overview

The Bronx Charter School for Excellence's academic program stresses high standards for all children within a supportive, highly professional school culture. These high standards coupled with a strong curriculum taught by effective teachers who believe every child has the ability to succeed, are the hallmark of our school.

Through these key program elements, BCSE creates highly motivated learners who are excited about learning. They become competent readers, writers, and communicators. They compute accurately, express themselves articulately and artistically, use technology effectively, think analytically and critically and conduct themselves respectfully and appropriately and have a desire to contribute to the well-being of their community. The elements of BCSE’s academic program and school design that propel student learning and achievement are:
  • High academic standards
  • A broad liberal arts-education
  • A "back to basics" educational approach (i.e., phonics-based reading curriculum in the early grades that include direct instruction)
  • Longer school day
  • Performance-based compensation for staff
  • Clearly articulated behavior standards for students
  • School uniforms for students
  • A commitment to academic performance accountability through internal and external standardized assessments and student portfolios reviews
  • A commitment to financial accountability
  • Active parent involvement
Our longer school day provides extra instructional time which allows for both academic rigor and enriched activities.
The Bronx Charter School for Excellence provides teachers with working conditions that are optimal including ample access to technology, curriculum resources and regular professional development. At BCSE, professional development is ongoing, differentiated and collaborative. Our teachers acknowledge that they are lifelong learners. Our staff is rewarded for high performance with discretionary bonuses and performance based salary increases.
